What Equestrian Vaulting has Taught me About Horsemanship

As a dressage trainer, I have always emphasized the importance of building a strong foundation in horsemanship. When my daughter started equestrian vaulting and joined her vaulting team, I was initially terrified. However, as I watched her progress and learned more about vaulting, I began to appreciate the valuable lessons it imparts, not just for my daughter but also for me.

Equestrian vaulting has taught me a whole new perspective on horsemanship. The combination of gymnastics and dance on horseback requires an exceptional level of harmony between the vaulter and the horse. I have come to understand that it's not just about riding; it's about developing a deep connection and understanding with the horse, as well as an intense trust in the horse.

Through vaulting, I have learned to appreciate the significance of trust and communication in working with horses. The trust that my daughter has developed with her vaulting horse is truly inspiring. Witnessing how they work together as a team, anticipating each other's movements and responding with synchronicity, has been a profound lesson for me. As a dressage trainer, I tend to think that you have to be just right in the saddle for the horse to feel comfortable. However, as I watch vaulting, I have found that as long as you are gentle and balanced, the horse is happy. This has opened up my eyes and changed my perspective while teaching. It has allowed me to find each person's unique balance that makes both horse and rider happy in their work. We are not cookie cutters and can never all sit the exact same way. It is about finding the way for a person as an individual to find balance and softness in the aids. Only that way can they be correct.

Equestrian vaulting has highlighted the importance of balance and body awareness in riding. The emphasis on strength, flexibility, and coordination in vaulting has reinforced the idea that a physically and mentally balanced rider is fundamental to achieving harmony with the horse. These lessons have reshaped my approach to teaching dressage, emphasizing the holistic development of both rider and horse.

Equestrian vaulting has broadened my understanding of horsemanship, reminding me that at the core of our discipline lies the bond between rider and horse. As a dressage trainer, I am grateful for the insights I have gained from my daughter's vaulting journey, and I look forward to incorporating these lessons into my own teaching philosophy. As a dressage trainer, I have always emphasized the importance of building a strong foundation in horsemanship. As I watched her progress and learned more about vaulting, I began to appreciate the valuable lessons it imparts, not just for my daughter, but for me as well. While I am still terrified watching my daughter, I am also in awe of the connection she has established with the horses and the natural body language that she developed in such a short amount of time. Honestly, I am hoping this sport keeps growing and growing as it is a very special type of horse sport that should not be overlooked.
